Sapphire Meaning: An Overview

It could be argued that Sapphires are best loved colored gemstone in the world right now and perhaps this has always been the case as the famously blue sapphire has been mentioned as a stone of great value and power since writing began.

Sapphires are not just blue, they also come in almost every other color of the rainbow except red - if they are just the right sort of red, they become Sapphire’s equally illustrious sister, Rubies.

Sapphires have been the gemstone of royalty from Ancient Persians, Greeks and Romans all the way to the present day with Princess Diana and Princess Kate sharing the most famous sapphire engagement ring ever made.

The Legacy of Sapphire: A Crystal's Journey

Legends that swirl around this precious gem are too many to count, it is mentioned 12 times in the Bible, the tablets that contained the 10 commandments were made of sapphires, a giant sapphire’s reflection makes the sky blue and Shah Jahan who built the Taj Mahal, had a throne encrusted with sapphires that took 7 years to build.

Helen of Troy, King Solomon, Charlemagne, Ivan the Terrible, Richard the Lionheart, Catherine the Great and Josephine Bonaparte are just some of the notable wearers of sapphires.

Sapphire Color Range

Generally when we think of sapphires we think of the color blue. Not just any blue but a deep cornflower blue with an almost silky smooth depth.

An anonymous poet once wrote of the color of sapphire as:

"the blue of a clear sky just minutes after sundown."

The color blue has a positive effect on all of us both physically and mentally, it suggests both the sky and the sea, wide open spaces and a sense of freedom. Blue calms us down, slowing our metabolism and cooling our bodies.

However, sapphires can also appear in an array of other equally gorgeous colors and each has their own special strengths.

The Emotional and Spiritual Benefits of Sapphire

The primary emotional benefit of sapphire is its protective qualities from mental or spiritual attacks. It will bring peace and calm to your life, enhance your mental clarity and boost your motivation.

It will give you confidence, increase your leadership abilities, improve your communication skills and better your general social skills.

Sapphire can focus your mind on achieving your goals and ambitions, letting you see a clear path to getting where you want to be and giving you the discipline needed to get there.

Sapphire will help you recover from personal loss or painful memories, reminding you that all things must pass and one day everything will be better.

This gemstone will inspire faithfulness and loyalty both in yourself and in others. In the past, kings would often wear sapphires to ensure fidelity from their wives and protect the royal line.

The Physical Benefits of Sapphire

Sapphire can be used to treat various blood disorders such as anemia and hemophilia, and it can help strengthen the walls of the veins as well as alleviating varicose veins. It is used to assist cellular disorders, regulate the glands and improve the endocrine system.

Physical Bnefits of Gemstones

Sapphire has a long held belief in curing eye infections and improving eyesight. It helps with headaches and migraines and treats throat and ear infections.

Sapphire is also great for detoxification and purification of the body therefore improving health and promoting weight loss.

Star Sapphires have all the metaphysical properties and benefits that are possessed by other sapphires but with an enhanced and intensified energy. The three lines that float on the surface of these gemstones represent faith, hope and destiny.

Sapphire and the Chakras

According to ancient Hindu beliefs and many modern philosophies we all have seven sacred points within our bodies which influence our physical and mental well being. These points are called Chakras (meaning wheel or to spin) and are centers of energy that go from the base of the spine to the top of the head.

Chakra meditation

These seven Chakra points all have their own color and gemstones of the same or similar color can be used to unblock or realign a troubled Chakra.

Sapphires come in all colors so they make perfect Chakra gemstones - this could explain why they are so popular in India.

Please read our Chakra Gemstones article for more details

Can Sapphire unblock Chakras?

Yes, sapphires can help with all the Chakras.

  • Blue Sapphire - Throat Chakra-Helps improve communication and throat and thyroid issues
  • Black Sapphire - Root Chakra - Enhances feelings of security and confidence

  • Green Sapphire - Heart Chakra - Calms feelings of jealousy and eases grudges
  • Violet Sapphire - Third Eye Chakra - Increases decisiveness and faith
  • White Sapphire - Crown Chakra - Cures headaches and migraines

Discover which Chakra seems to be blocked and then use the appropriate colored sapphire for treatment. Find yourself a quite spot to lie down with the gemstone placed on the Chakra location. Breathe calmly, relax and let the sapphire do its work.

How to recharge and cleanse Sapphire

Sapphire is one of the most durable gemstone so it will be able to stand up to any sort of cleansing ritual whether it is water, sun or smoke.

My favorite is to leave the sapphire gemstone out on a clear night under the moonlight of a full moon (take care of thieves or curious animals) to get a thorough recharge. Running your sapphire under a natural waterfall or in a fresh stream will also cleanse and recharge.

Where to place Sapphire

Sapphire is a gemstone of calm and of connection and from these attributes we can gain a hint about where to place one in the home for maximum influence.

The area of the house where you like to relax and get away from the worries of the world would be a good place to locate a sapphire crystal - the living room, a reading corner, even the bathroom.

The dining room is often the place where the whole family can gather at the same time. Sapphire can help these times to run smoothly by opening the gates of communication.

Sapphire is also a gemstone of wisdom and, according to the practice of Feng Shui, the northeast area of the house is the centre of knowledge and self-improvement, another ideal spot for a sapphire decoration.

“O you afflicted one, tossed with tempest and not comforted, behold I will lay your stones with colorful gems, and lay your foundations with sapphires.”

It says in the bible and we can echo this sentiment by placing sapphire in the basement or on the ground floor of the home to represent the strength and solidity of the home and family and the honesty and truth it is based on.

How to use Sapphire

Sapphire is most famous as an item of jewelry and there really is not a more beautiful object than a perfectly cut blue sapphire ring or a set of padparadscha pinkish orange sapphire earrings. However there is much more to this sacred stone.

Its spiritual power is renowned and the easiest way for this power to influence you throughout the day is as jewelry. Bear in mind the color of the jewelry and the various Chakra points - a blue sapphire pendant would be close to the Throat Chakra while a pair of violet sapphire earrings can affect the Third Eye Chakra.

Sometimes it might not be appropriate to wear expensive looking jewelry so the sapphires could be carried in the pocket or in a purse or handbag. They can continue influencing the body from there and can always be reached for when extra reassurance is needed.

At home, the house can be decorated with sapphires or they can be placed on Chakra points during relaxation or meditation.

Sapphire and wealth

Sapphires are a gemstone of prosperity and abundance so they can certainly have an impact on your wealth in a positive way.

They are also a gemstone of truth and honesty so they will inspire you to reach your financial ambitions in a fair and honorable way.

Wearing an expensive and eminent gemstone such as a sapphire will also let people know you are a person of success and taste and rouse feelings of confidence in your abilities.

Can I use Sapphire for Meditation and Yoga?

Sapphire is an excellent choice for a gemstone of meditation. It stimulates communication which also means communication with yourself and your inner consciousness.

Sapphire is known to arouse lucid dreams and, during meditation, this can lead to reaching a higher realm of consciousness.

As a soothing and calming gemstone, sapphire can help you while doing traditional yoga movements and positions, keeping the breathing relaxed and the body flowing smoothly.

Can I wear or carry Sapphire every day?

We each have different reactions to the spiritual powers of gemstones. Some can wear the most powerful crystals every day without an issue while others find certain gemstones just too overwhelming.

Sapphire is one of the most powerful and stimulating gemstones so it is possible that it may take some getting used to.

I suggest wearing or holding your sapphire for a day or two, if you feel a little overpowered or over stimulated, take it off for a day or two until you feel strong enough to wear or hold again.

Sapphire is a very popular engagement ring gemstone so history will tell us that wearing sapphire each day should not be too much of a problem.

Sapphire Goddesses

Sapphires tend to be linked with the Gods, such as Saturn, Jupiter and Apollo, more than Goddesses.

White or clear sapphires have an association with the Roman goddess of love, Venus.

In south east Asia, we have a Buddhist goddess, Tsun-Kyan-Kse, who looks after our souls as we move to the next life. She has a golden body and sapphire eyes.

Can I help my pet with Sapphire?

All gemstones can influence the health and well-being of our pets in the same way that they can influence us.

In theory a sapphire could be used to assist a pet with a number of issues including communication problems such as your pet not responding to commands or excessive barking, mewing or whining.

However with such an expensive and usually relatively small gemstone I feel other gemstone may be a better choice.

Sapphire Elixir

In ancient India it was believed that an elixir of sapphire and water could cure snake, scorpion and spider bites and ancient Romans would use sapphire water to ease sore eyes.

An old recipe for improving eyesight was to powder the gemstone and mix it with vinegar but we would never suggest this!

A gemstone elixir can be quickly made by just popping a clean gemstone or two into some fresh spring or mineral water and leaving it for a few hours. Then just drink the water, make it into tea, add to bath water or dab it on an affected area of the body.

You could put some sapphire elixir into a spray bottle and then mist your home to fill it will its spiritual powers - in the dining room to get conversation flowing or in the lounge to add an air of relaxation.

Sapphire and Dreams

A sapphire under the pillow (or tucked in the pillowcase to stop you losing it) will help you understand your dreams more fully.

Sapphire is supposed to aid with astral projection or out of body experiences during your dreams.

Dreaming about sapphires is usually a good sign as they can mean good luck is coming your way. If your dream features a very large sapphire ring, a passionate affair may be on the horizon. And if you find a sapphire it means true love is on its way.

Which gemstones go well with Sapphire?

Sapphire is a powerful gemstone that does not really need much help from another crystal.

As a general guide certain types of crystals can work together well:

  • Gemstones of a similar color
  • Gemstones with the same element
  • Gemstones with the same zodiac association
  • Gemstones with the same Chakra association
  • Gemstones with the same mineral group

So, for example, a blue sapphire and an aquamarine could be used together as they are both blue tones.

Sapphire is a water element gemstone and so is moonstone so they can be combined quite well.

Sapphire is associated with Taurus and so is emerald so these two precious gemstones can work together.

Yellow sapphire and citrine influence the Solar Plexus Chakra and as a team they can work even more effectively.

All the various colors of sapphire are all part of the corundum mineral group so should be able to work together. Rubies are also part of the corundum family but some Vedic astrologers advise against wearing sapphire and ruby together. If you follow the Vedic zodiac it may be wise to get expert advice before wearing them together.

Sapphire and the workplace

Sapphires can have a really positive influence on the workplace. They are a gemstone of communication so can help with the connection between work colleagues, employees and with customers.

Sapphires are a gemstone of prosperity and abundance and every business is in need of those two qualities.

Sapphires bring a clarity of mind and a level of concentration that will help in all business decisions as well as creativity which could boost your enterprise.

Sapphire’s honesty and fidelity will also bring morality and sense of fair play to your business endeavors.

Sapphire Pendulums

Pendulums are a fun way to reveal hidden truths about yourself. Suspend a crystal from a string or chain and ask a series of yes or no questions to access your subconscious. The movement of the pendulum reveals the answers.

The gemstone at the end of the chain needs to be fairly substantial to be able to swing in a way that can easily understood and a sapphire may be an expensive option.

A small sapphire in combination with a large crystal of your choice can be attached to the chain as a less expensive option.

Use a pendulum of any type of crystal over a sapphire placed on the floor or table to influence movement of the pendulum.

A sapphire pendant can be used as a pendulum and the gemstone’s ability to reveal the truth makes it an ideal pendulum.

Sapphire and EMF

Our modern world is full of smart phones, computers, WIFI routers and interactive TVs and as a result we are inundated with harmful electro-magnetic waves.

Gemstones can offer some protection from this invisible smog but sapphires are more for psychological protection than physical protection so I would recommend something like malachite or amazonite.

Black tourmaline and black onyx have been known to act as a barrier to these harmful waves so black sapphires could probably work in a similar way.

Final thoughts on Sapphire

Most famously a deep velvety blue, the celebrated sapphire gemstone can also be found in almost all colors of the rainbow as well as color-change versions and wonderful star sapphires.

However it is not just their stunning beauty that has distinguished sapphires from almost all other colored stones, their daunting spiritual power has captivated people since the dawn of civilization.

Those early cultures lucky enough to come across this precious gemstone would have noticed that beneath the good looks lay an almost indestructible crystal, tougher than nearly all other gemstones with diamonds the only exception.

Perhaps it was this breathtaking façade concealing a formidable interior that guided it to becoming possibly the most powerful spiritual crystal of them all.

One thing is sure; Sapphire is a must have in anyone's gemstone collection. Especially the blue crystals are some of the most fascinating in the world of gemstones.
